| Editorial Reviews:
On paper, this tuner about, and played exclusively by kids (the title refers to their age and the bar mitzvah around which the plot revolves) seemed like an odd fit for Jason Robert Brown. This, after all, is a composer who made his initial splash with the somber Parade and the two-hander The Last Five Years, about the unraveling of a marriage. But surprise! Brown’s score, lightweight but very fun pop, is the best thing about the show - okay, along with the swell cast of freakishly gifted children. The book, about a NYC kid adjusting to life in a small Indiana town, is rather cliché—no wonder the characters are identified by one- and two-word descriptions ("outsider," "loser," "drama queen," etc.) on the booklet’s back cover. But on their own, the songs work well, and Brown proves adept at coming up with killer hooks ("Hey Kendra" is a really funny take on an R&B seduction number and "It Can’t Be True" has an unfortunate way of drilling itself into your head). The show pokes fun at Disney a couple of times, but it actually sounds not unlike a musical-theater take on the High School Musical franchise. -- Elisabeth Vincentelli

Pure fun! August 23, 2009 Rosalita (NYC) Loved the Broadway show. Have no clue as to why it didn't get good reviews. Must have been sour old people who reviewed the show. I laughed throughout the show and loved the actors and the energy. They gave it their all and it showed. I wanted to get the soundtrack because of the show and I love it. I hope they do a road tour and many other people get a chance to see this show.
High School Musical for the Musically Literate May 18, 2009 Erin 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Saw this show in New York only because I am a JRB fan. My friends and I were bored out of our minds. The voices were decent considering the ages of the kids, but the music is predictable. The show misses the mark in that it is too smart for the younger set, and far too simple for anyone over the age of 13. There are a few catchy songs like "Lamest place in the world" and "It can't be true." I suggest downloading the few good songs and leaving the rest.
Great Production March 5, 2009 M. Read Devine (Sydney, Australia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My Broadway obsessed teenager requested this CD, and since listening to it several times, I am quite impressed with the production. Good for 13 year olds and 43 year olds! It has now got me wanting to see the show.
Love It! February 17, 2009 Kay D. (Woodbridge, New Jersey United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this CD for my daughter after seeing the show on Broadway. WE absolutely love it. She knows every word to every song - what talented young people we have been blessed with!
Best Show Ever! February 5, 2009 S. Valon Frandsen 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great CD! The lyrics are included inside. Songs included are upbeat and express the life of a teenager quite well. Good for those in their teenage years as well as those who went through them.
